Did they run in the red for a couple of years as a result?

Some believe that insurance rate increases are the result of loses in the collapse of the stock market.

During the boom years of the 1990s, insurance companies invested heavily in the stock market. With favorable returns, they were able to keep premium costs low and still make fat profits.

When a national recession took hold this decade, however, the stock market stumbled, and insurers lost money. They in turn raised premium rates, at least in part to offset their losses, the argument goes.

Don't you wish you could just "raise rates" to make up any loses?

ok... well it is obvious you know more about this issue than I... I do recall seeing a 60 minutes episode regarding a county in mississippi that is used by trial lawyers all over the country for lawsuits against drug companies. The plaintiffs deliberately take unsafe dosages and then sue... and usually win millions, sounded like a scam to me. No fan of drug companies here but I don't like the lawyer lobbies either.

A lot of the class actions that Lerach initiates against tech companies are completely bogus... of course there are the few that are legitimate too. Still you could make a case that these frivolous lawsuits need to be contained.

OK that is the ONE THING that Bush has worked on that is not black and white bad in my book. The ONE THING. Thats it though!
