Al Gore was instrumental in formulating policies that aided the development of the world-wide web, which while not the same as the internet, is sort of a window that enables non-technical folks to use the internet.

Gore is one of the few Vice-Presidents that played a key role in the administration's policy-making -- quite unlike his predecessor, Dan Quayle, whose only "duty" was to play pinball games in the White House (I am told Quayle even holds the world record for that - something like 552 hours of continuous pinball games ;-) )
