But is supporting actual constitutional privileges of states or opposing the imposition of homosexual marriage across the whole nation by judicial fiat and/or the legislature of one state, pandering to racists or "gay bashers"?

That is true. Most people never ever expect that the "opposition" can add anything truthful or meaningful. So, you are quite correct that meaningful change must come from what is perceived to be "within". I have found that on SI. I gently try to correct some of the more zealous (and over the line) left wingers. I can't say it works very well, but sometimes it does. When I tell some person of the right they are calling names, even in the egregious and obvious cases, there is no improvement. Ergo ignore.

But it would be a beautiful world if all people of all stripes would corral and control their own. Not going to happen though.
