Ish, Western Kansas is a lot drier than the east. There are a lot of trees, and rolling hills, in the East. Middle of the state is fairly flat, with fewer trees. Far west in the state, it is flat as a fritter, with barely any trees in sight.

The mountains suck the moisture out of the air, and as the wind comes swooping down from the Rockies, it sometimes works up a head of steam, and causes all kinds of problems.
