re: IT commodity: I wish I had a way of digging up some old news articles from when I was in college, 86-88 timeframe, the exact same articles as this one existed, it was just regarding PCs.

They had had this frothy period in the early 80s with all those pc clones like kaypro and commodore and by 1986 most had gone bust.

60 mins had an interview with Dr Grace Hopper on computers, she handed Morley Safer a length of wire as long as the equivalent of a nanosecond or something like that... he said, "the PC revolution is over", she said -no, we have the Model T. I'm glad I am old enough to remember that time, I know when I graduated from Berkeley it wasn't easy to get a job in SV. Not impossible but not easy. The workerbees didn't get stock options then, or at least I didn't when I was hired.

It would be too easy for google to IPO now and become the next msft, with their story being similar to msft. Could happen though. For sure I think this is a great time to build a long term portfolio in tech though.
