The religious community of southeast China's Fujian Province held a ceremony Thursday to donate 1.36 million yuan (some 164,000 US dollars) for local impoverished college students from ethnic minorities.

The donations, from 51 groups and individuals, are to help poorminority students continue their studies.

Since 2000, the provincial religious affairs department has begun to assist needy minority students studying in higher education institutions, and aided 166 such undergraduates in 2001 with 500,000 yuan (60,240 dollars) in stipends.

Some 330 local minority students have so far received grants from the religious circle.

A growing number of local minority students are enrolling in higher education institutions in the province and around the country, from 958 in 2001 to 1,228 in 2002. The figure recruited this year is expected to exceed 1,000 out of 2,500 candidates.
