Girls liked him very much- from Abenzeitung (AZ, Munich weekend 9/10th aug) Schwarzenegger: as his Munich buddies remember him Munich; Mister Universum from Graz with his 56 wants to become a governor of California - but it all started in Munich. When 16, Arnold Schwarzenegger crossed Isar - to see the then European body building champion Reinhard Smolana. "At that time, I already had my studio on Isabellastrasse and often slept there," told us the sportsman (he's 64 now) during the interview. "Then one morning there was Arnie on the doorstep - at eight oclock. 'I want to be as strong as you are', he said", remembers Smolana. "I told him, he had to wait one more hour, so that I get my share of sleep," grins Smolana. "An hour later, he was still there. So we started right away with training." A start of a new friendship, which has lasted until today. When Arnie comes to Munich, they see each other and Smolana visited him already in US. "We had a lot of fun in Munich", remembers Smolana. "we often partied on Isar. Arnold was a sunnyboy and girls liked him very much". For the "Mister Universum" title, which Arnold won in 1967, when he was 20, he has to thank his Munich buddy:"The championship was in London, but Arnold had no money for the flight ticket, because his sponsor left him in the cold. So we passed the hat around for him in the studio." It was Reinhard Smolana also, who in the spring 1968 introduced Schwarzenegger to the British Roger Field."Arnold worked in a studio as a bodybuilder-trainer and wanted to learn English, so I could pump iron for free," says Field. After the workouts they regularly worked on his vocabulary in a Schwabing waterhole. " Already in those times his 'thes' sounded as 'Duhs'. And they have not changed since," gripes Field. But Arnie was gung-ho."In any case he wanted to go to America. He jumped on anything, that would help him get there." He had a small flat at Isartor After the lessons they went out to make the Munich downtown an unsafe place to be."Arnie had an Opel Rekord, year 58. He drove it like crazy. The only thing that mattered, was his biceps out the window, tearing down the Leopoldstrasse at 50 mph," says Field. "That's why I preferred to sit in the back. But that was no help either, because the driver's seat was broken, so every time Arnold gave gas, he slipped all the way back." Field also visited Arnold in his one-room appartment at Isartor:"Not exactly an example of order." In september 1968 Schwarzeneger left Munich for America. His Munich friends are sure, their old-time buddy has the right stuff for the governor of the sunny state."He reached an absolute zenith both in the sport and in the film, so he's looking for the next challenge. He'll master it as well. Whatever Arnold does, he does it well," says Reinhard Solana. "Governator" Schwarzenegger himself allows no doubts about his ability to play his new role:"I have very good plans. We must make sure, that everybody in California has a fantastic job" said the 56 years old at his press conference on Friday.
