We always complained amongst ourselves, it is quite natural and cathartic. In the USN I remember a saying something like a Sailor is never happy unless he is complaining. Every day there was a newsletter with a list of military dead and missing from accidents and acts of terror. If you forgot about all the sacrifices made for your freedom before you were born you could be reminded daily of these sacrifices. No doubt life in Iraq for the military is tougher than anything I had to do, but one never knows what the outcome will be when you sign up. Also their sense of achievement should be quite a bit higher, at least it would be for me.
