Russia has now, btw, a mixed multi-party system, designed to build a center-based-consensus system.

Same thing is going on in China, although in a more gradual, systematic way. That is, proportional representation multi-party elections are hold in rural local elections.

Most arab election and democracy experts talk about what is a change through "participating democracy" to avoid too much unstability.

If you had followed CSPAN for a couple of years you would also know that most american experts have the same view. (for example during the World Economy Congress) The regular joke is that if Saudi would have elections Osaman would win.

To understand communism one must know about property rights and landreforms.
The US history does not serve very well for this purpose, although it was fun when Canada demanded back their properties as response to the Helms-Burton act.
