Wages 20 times higher than China's

Wages in Korea's manufacturing sector were nearly 20 times higher on average than in China's during the 15 years through 2001, the Bank of Korea said, calling for measures to iron out the imbalance.
In a recent booklet on China's economic development and Korean policy goals, the central bank noted monthly wages of domestic manufacturing workers averaged $1,031 between 1986 and 2001, versus China's $53.

Even when compared with China's most industrialized cities in coastal areas, Korean workers were being paid 13.9 percent higher than their Chinese counterparts during the period.

The average annual wage hike reached 11 percent in Korea, while the comparable rate stood at 7.8 percent in China.
