China's economy is continuing to boom, the country reported yesterday, a day after neighbouring Japan renewed its criticism of the Asian giant's refusal to revalue its currency upward.

In the first seven months of the year, China's exports shot up by 33.4% while imports gained by 42.9% compared with the same period last year, the country's state television reported.

Exports, aided by a weak yuan narrowly pegged to the U.S. dollar, amounted to US$228.4-billion for the period. Imports were worth US$222.3-billion.

"The value of exports and imports ... hit historic highs in July," the station said without giving actual figures.
