It appears the Bush administration believe if they went to U.N. for peace keeping troops Iraq would become a quagmire.

That's probably not totally unfounded - we've seen the extent to which certain countries have jumped on the chance to stab us in the back (notably France), and we can be assured that UN "involvement" will be cynically used against us in any way possible. The UN is above all an international political body with all that goes with such politics and these lofty UN ideals one hears about are mostly fairy tales for children.

Still, it was a bit better to have had Khrushchev bang his shoe at the UN than actually launch some missiles, no ? The organization is not entirely a bad idea. (better than nothing....)
