Sounds like your install of excel might have gone south. You should try a repair via the link below but I doubt if your lost file will reappear. There's probably a way to limit the number of rows and columns by making a new global template but I wouldn't know how to begin. What would be the point? The only thing I can see that it would accomplish is making each worksheet a little smaller "size wise"
