Missouri's a little different (we always are). Where else would you find a Democrat governor and a staunchly conservative state House and Senate? Yes, on Election Day, we all agree that The People have spoken.
We just can't figure out what they said.
The Legislature says "No" to any tax increase.
The Governor says "No" to almost any cut in spending.
What we have agreed on is that any increase in funding for education needs to be done at the local level, through property tax increases or bond issues. It should not be a statewide mandate.
So far, most _ not all _ of the state government jobs cut have been through the elimination of positions that were unfilled. There have been some outright layoffs, but not a huge number.
Hey, we are reasonable people. Given the circumstances, I think we're doing well with this, even though the governor's approval rating is just slightly better than that of Gray Davis in California.
