Perphas you nephew could discuss the possible use of Zonegran (zonisamide) with his doctor. I remember from the time when I was following Elan more closely, that there appeared to patients who were satisfied with its use. There are of course a number of potential side-effects which some people experience, but not other.

One - in this case potentially positive - side-effect is that the drug appears to cause weight loss. Elan has even run some small trials on this theme.

You can find the label at fda.gov

Please, note that I am not in any way in a position to give or even suggest medical advice. The potential for Zonegran - which is approved for seizures - to induce weight losses, was just a small piece of information, that happened to cross my way.

Elmer,

In addition to the drug that Erik mentioned, the more widely-used anti-epilepsy drug Topamax causes significant weight-loss in many people. It's being used now as a migraine preventative in lower doses than is used in epilepsy - I actually tried it myself for migraines but had to stop when I encountered the word-finding difficulty that occurs in about 10% of users - I just couldn't think of some simple words.

Certainly might be worth asking his doctor about it - of course you might find the doctor unwilling to experiment with a regimen that is currently working.

Nobody quite understands how it causes weight loss. Seems to be a mixture of appetite suppression and increased thermogenesis (heat generation).
