I don't know where you two have been for the last ten years. Diversity has meant "Gay" in academia for some time. There are diversity clubs in high schools and colleges, and it is a code word for gay alliance. Multi-cultural or International clubs are popular for truly diverse groups. Specific ethnic clubs are also popular. Of course the affirmative action department, EEOC etc. advocates for diversity but when they use the word they usually mean to get gays on board supporting other groups.
