DUH! THE ARPANET WAS FEDERAL

Very good, you deserve a cookie! Now you understand the importance of Al Gore's interest in the network. It would still be a minor federal playtoy if someone, in this case Al Gore, had not championed the effort to open the net to public and commercial use, and appropriate the funds to have the government continue to provide infrastructure like the DNS naming, protocol research and standardization, without which it would have withered. Just compare it to the computer language Ada which remained a DOD playtoy.

Another example of how gov can provide the kind of innovation that our good capitalist need. Gov doesn't need to shrink too much but it does need to be be paid for.
