Sorry to be so long answering your question, been away for awhile. I think I've figured out what is causing my problem. After a reformat things seem to be ok until I install Norton System Works. I've used this for several years, and have the 2003 version, but for some reason when I install it now it causes problems. To answer your question, it does it with any site or anything that requires a connection to the internet, even though I'm connected to dsl and my isp confirms this, as well as the status box here. Its like you check work offline then try to load a browser page, I just get this page cannot be displayed. I have IE 6, and have the latest service packs. I've uninstalled System Works, but the damage is done. I think I do another reformat and just install Norton Virus.
