I checked "narcissism" in Webster's, which has as it's first definition "egoism," which has as its first definition "a doctrine that individual self-interest is the actual motive of all conscious action."

Found that interesting.

I don't see us as having any substantive disagreement.

No, I haven't read Rand's Virtue of Selfishness yet, though it's one of those books which lurks in the back of my mind as something I should get to at some point.

Mark Twain contended that all our acts are inherently selfish, even those which are ostensibly purely charitable, only we mask the selfishness with claims of more approved motives.
