"Knowing thyself" was not taken by Socrates to mean "know onesself in one's empirical individuality", but rather "know one's nature as a human being", which can only be done by one's mind. The gut has its place, though, I admit......

Why would you WANT to make a purse out of an ear.

I read somewhere that some students at some university or lab or somethimg (you can see how definite a memory this is!) actually did make a purse out of a sow's ear, or actually out of several -- they apparently found a way to make thread or yarn out of the cartilege of the ear and wove it into a purse. Just the sort of thing that young people with talent and way too much time on their hands would think of doing!
