We had reason to fear the export of the Islamic Revolution, and Saddam was on the front line of containment at that point. In fact, at the time, and given the posture of Iran in respect of the United States, Israel, and more moderate Gulf regimes, it made a lot of sense to help Saddam against the Iranians, who had a numerical advantage.........
