The Abbey of Thèlé was Rabelais' utopia, the life there notable for courtesy and respect. Elegance of setting is matched by elegance of behavior, and people there live the life of the senses.

[didn't know that off the top of my head, I had to pull out Barzun's From Dawn to Decadence and flip to the pages where he writes about Rabelais]

Pantagruel also said Sir Gaster - the stomach - is the ultimate power and source of all that matters.

Kind of jibes with your 'gut' theory....
