Well, that was exactly my point, Jewel, if you had read my prior posts. "Follow your bliss" was being taken out of context and the meaning of bliss was getting lost. I was trying to point out Campbell's original use- which was more in line with the metaphysical concept of "becoming Buddhalike" than with doing whatever you want that makes you "happy".

The Augustus phrase struck me as being catchy enough to be misused the same way-- especially since it had the ever-popular LOVE in it as an added fillip, so I pointed it out to Neo, who had brought up the origin of the phrase Do What Thou Wilt-- another silly putty phrase, imo.

I don't see Campbell as belonging to the left or right; he was an extremely well-educated man who managed to write coherently and accessibly about the universalities of our belief systems, and the archetypes that run through them. I guess I am having trouble seeing your and Neo's sort of elitist attitude about him. He was not like that guy who wrote Celestine Prophecies-- now THAT was New Age drek. Like a literary Yanni.
