"....the power of the gun. It has not brought peace to Israel and it will not bring peace to us."

The "power of the gun" as you call it may not bring us peace(although it might) but it certainly will not bring us to defeat which caving in to terrorism ultimately will. How should people respond to suicide bombings? Perhaps as the BBC wishes by releasing prisoners or putting the arm on israel to ignore the suicide bombings and take down the fences which are its only non-military defense. It makes no sense. OK, you think we should maintain our commitment to Israel but we should strongarm them into an appeasement policy. Well, that's one issue.

But what about commitments to free flow of oil from the Persian Gulf - which past President's have made commitments to?

Some evidences of that commitment would include:
FDR's declaration of SA as a vital interest of the US.
The Carter Doctrine - which says we'll fight to prevent the domination of the Persian Gulf by any other outside power.
Reflagging Kuwaiti tankers during the Iran-Iraq war.
Provision of satellite intelligence to Iraq to help prevent its conquest by Iran.
Gulf War 1 & 2
Etc.
