China Crushes Mountain Of Fake CDs

BEIJING, Aug. 12, 2003

(AP) Switching on the wood-chippers, authorities across China reduced more than 42 million smuggled and pirated discs to slivers on Tuesday, part of a continuing anti-counterfeiting effort aimed at silencing critics overseas.

The government, which stages such spectacles every few months, called it the largest-ever public destruction of illegal CDs, DVDs and other videodiscs.
