Pd is much cheaper and has many of the same properties as platinum. Platinum is used in jewelry much more though. It's a matter of value. I always try to buy low and Pd is selling right now for below NA production costs (which are more than $250/oz). The companies that produce it outside Russia stay afloat because they have presold a lot of their production at double current prices when Pd climbed to $1000 a few years ago. Even at double its current price Pd should be the metal of choise for catalytic converters for cars, for example.
