I don't blame you for wanting to disregard literally the thousands of posts on SI which strongly condemned are actions in Afghanistan. I also don't blame you for ignoring the leading newspaper of record which was also opposed, namely the N.Y. Times. However, it doesn't do your argument any good to ignore the truth of history, which is printed all over this site.

Many of the same people, who criticized our actions in Iraq today, criticized our actions in Afghanistan. I suspect in two or three years, they will also claim they supported our endeavor in Iraq when the people are living peacefully, free of the torment of a mad dictators Baathist regime.

Having said that, just for the sake of discussion, let's go down your path and see where it might lead. First, a question. What gave Hussein and the Baath party international legitimacy to hold the Iraqi people hostage, which didn't exist in Afghanistan with the Taliban? A mad dictator pulling the strings? Some barrels of oil?

In both instances, there existed a lawless group of people who held power over the people through fear and torture. The Kurds were doing battle with Hussein, and the Northern Alliance was doing battle with the Taliban. We simply supported one side over the other. The Kurds begged us for years to depose of that murdering thug, and they were a duly elected group of people. Hussein was also a far greater human rights violator.
