What you proposed was exactly Morganthau's plan for the germans, to reduce them to a strictly agrarian society, weaken the economy and take away the industrial capacity that had facilitated wars by the militarists .... this was what had been tried to lesser degree in 1919, and had led to resumed strife after a short period .... chances are, leaving such a capable people of this size in such a state would have led directly to more war, and not very long after either ..... it is a good thing Truman listened to Marshall instead, imho, he made some mistakes in that time, like favouring de Gaulle over vietnamese aspirations to independence, but he got the Marshall Plan right, that is one of the greatest things the US ever did, and it has paid off since in the form of long-term european peace

Under the king afghans had a far more civilised and more liberal society going .... there is a lady in Victoria BC who goes on and on about this, how recent developments in the country do not reflect its essential spirit ..... dealing with the russian invasion didn't help any, nor did the US manner of countering the russians, and in the process the land reverted to warlordism .... there is nothing carved in stone saying it must remain that way, so i disagree quite completely with your post - Message 19203276

I think we should try, and try hard, to help afghans get it together .... this doesn't mean sending buckets of money, although a little will be useful .... and it definitely doesn't mean sending ships full of arms .... what it means at the core, is teaching the children
