The terrorists hope that their attacks will empower people like you -- people who will seek to destroy the institutions that are the essential building blocks of a free society because you fear living in a free society. By the way, the WTC was the largest concentration of people working for Wall Street, and it is a larger physical target than the trading floor itself. Wall Street and the White House (or Congress) were clearly the targets. Your voice is loud, and that voice has done more damage to the precious institutions of a free society than the terrorists. Your voice brings comfort to the terrorists and your hatred gives then a sense of purpose, making them stronger and appealing to more and more people by the day.

Self-defense is the right of all human beings. No apology is ever needed for self-defense. We can and must defend ourselves against terrorism. But when naked aggression takes the place of self-defense, and when the institutions of a free society are shoved aside in pursuit of naked aggression, then our precious free society is on its way to being destroyed.
