Dolphins' Moore out for year; Dixon has ankle surgery

The news was once again dire for the Miami Dolphins on Monday as the team, unfortunately, continued to put its worst foot, or, more accurately, feet forward.

ESPN.com confirmed Monday evening that rookie linebacker Eddie Moore, a second-round selection and the Dolphins' highest choice in the 2003 draft, will miss the entire season after surgery to repair a left foot injury suffered in last Friday night's preseason game. And starting left tackle Mark Dixon had arthroscopic surgery on his right ankle after an MRI exam revealed a stress fracture and some debris in the joint.

Dixon, arguably the most essential starter on the Miami line, will be sidelined indefinitely and may miss the regular-season opener. He will be evaluated on a week-to-week basis.

The Dolphins had earlier acknowledged that tight end and deep snapper Ed Perry would be sidelined for the entire season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament sustained in the first game of the preseason. Starting fullback Rob Konrad suffered a broken hand in the contest.

Originally termed a sprain, the injury to Moore was diagnosed by noted foot specialist Bob Chandler of Charlotte, N.C., as a "Lis Franc" sprain. That is a mid-foot injury from which it is often difficult to rehabilitate. Surgery was performed on Monday afternoon.

The surgery is very delicate and the recovery can be dicey.

A former University of Tennessee star, Moore was contending for a starting job. He was the 49th player chosen overall in the draft and signed a five-year, $3.455 million contract that included a signing bonus of $1.54 million.

In four college seasons, Moore totaled 219 tackles, six sacks, six quarterback pressures, and one interception. He played in 46 games and started 24 of them.

Dixon has been the team's most consistent offensive lineman, despite playing out of position at left tackle. A natural guard, Dixon is a superior pass blocker.

"I know he will do everything possible to get back on the field as soon as he can," Dolphins coach Dave Wannstedt said.

The injury to Dixon means that rookie Wade Smith, a third-round choice from Memphis will be moved into the starting lineup at left end for now. If the inexperienced Smith cannot handle the job, the Dolphins might have to consider switching right tackle Todd Wade to the weak side. Another possibility would be to sign free agent tackle Richmond Webb, who began his career in Miami and was released by Cincinnati this spring, as an insurance policy.
