Did you see Newt Gingrich on Charlie Rose?

I was all set to see it and blew it! Sounds like Charlie treated him well. From your report, I guess they did not spend much time on State.

I wish I shared your optimism with regard to Bush getting handily re-elected.

There are lots of things on the horizon hat make me think that he will face a tougher campaign than anyone imagines. I'll list them in no particular order of importance:

1.- Weak economic growth;

2.- A whiff of scandal, real or imagined, that might set off a media frenzy;

3.- Continuing difficulties in Iraq resulting in a slow stream of unacceptable casualties;

4.- A media frenzy surrounding his nomination of S. Ct. justice(s). He will no doubt nominate quite conservative candidates who will have difficulty passing Senate muster. This may alienate centrists--a group of voters he needs to garner should the Dems nominate a centrist themselves;

5.- Weak campaign style. Face it, he does not have the Clintonesque cheesey charisma of a game show host that Dean and Edwards to some extent have.

Unfortunately, the best thing that could happen politically to Bush is something awful: another significant domestic terror event that would allow him to show off his leadership in that arena. For obvious reasons, it could also end up being a double-edged sword.
