You seem to be confused about the meaning of "opposition". There were certainly people concerned about the cost of invading Afghanistan. That is to be expected. But there was no opposition to the idea of defending ourselves -- and that is what we did. Afghanistan is a mess, and will probably continue to be a mess. It is run by warlords -- we prefer to call them the "Northern Alliance" because it makes them sound less like tribal groups of well-armed thugs. We did not liberate them or benefit "Afghanistan". We simply dealt with a threat. All the crap about liberating Iraq and spreading democracy is little more than a desperate attempt to come up with some explanation for invading a sovereign nation that posed no threat -- and doing it while pissing on our allies and mortally wounding the one institution that provides some semblance of an international body to keep the peace -- the UN.
