Its turned into a popularity contest. Californians will put Arnold into office because, like Ten, they are sick of career politicians. Arnold is all glam so they will be titillated for the first year or two but when things don't improve much, they'll turn on him. In the meantime, if the state continues to flounder, we'll be hurt by that floundering along with Californians.

It's hard to imagine anyone having the key to this equation. It seems like a circus no matter who is in there.

Not if Riordan had run..........he's an incredible, capable, competent, professional human being who loves Los Angeles and California, and wants to do good by them. He single handedly turned LA from the depths of despair and deep recession into a revival matched by none.......it was nothing short of a miracle.

In three years, S. CA had lost 1 million jobs and experienced a diaspora that saw 1.5 million people leave the region. The riots left deep scars while the earthquake destroyed a portion of the city. Company after company was picking up and leaving the region. Few so little hope for LA. Riordan stepped in and in four short years turned everything around. Just as I was leaving in '98, LA started to grow again......thanks to Riordan.

It speaks volumes that the CA Republicans picked Simons, a crook, over Riordan to run against Davis. As I have said before, CA has been in trouble for a long time and choosing Simons over Riordan and now Arnold over Riordan is a very potent example of why.

The rest of the nation laughs but what they don't realize is that CA is the engine that drives our economy. If independent, CA would be the 5th largest economy in the world, up from 8th ten years ago. For that reason alone, we all should have a strong interest in what goes on in CA.

But there are more compelling reasons to watch CA. Its gangs have exported their drug trade to all the major cities of the countries, setting up 'corporate like' gang branch offices in those cities. Many of the heroin deaths in the Midwest are due to CA gangbangers.

The level of violence in CA cities, particularly S. CA, is disturbing and that violence also is exported to other parts of the country. Cut backs in social programs by Sacramento will increase the violence. Conservatives can criticize all they want but social programs keep a lid on the violence in big American cities.

And then there is the impact of the CA economy on the national economy. N. CA is still in recession; S.CA is not. However, the state deficit threatens to throw a curve to the South's recovery and push it back into recession. If S. CA. goes back into recession, so does the state. And if CA goes back into recession, there is a good chance the nation will as well. In the West, no one underestimates the impact of the CA economy....people out East shouldn't either.

This recall is not simply another CA fruitcake move..........its very serious and has major implications for the entire country. It really makes me wonder where this country is going.........things definitely seem out of whack!
