The issue is JOBS not GDP. The top line for a lot of companies is growing, and the bottom line (actual profits) are REALLY growing, due to the offshore dump of US labor. Companies can produce for less and pay workers nothing... fine but this is a short term phenomenon and congress knows it.

The productivity numbers are actually increasing due to offshoring, one US worker has a bunch of foreign contractor resources assigned to him/her.

We have a consumer driven economy and no hiring IN THE US means the economy goes down.... again. My feeling is that white collar unemployment rates are very close to double digits right now, the gov't figures only count who is applying for unemployment. White collar workers have been out of work forever, unemployment is totally irrelevant.

Killing these work visas will help a little. Both parties support visa reform I believe. My sense is that politicians don't understand the productivity numbers (due to offshoring) but they do get the rest of the picture at least.
