Police chiefs in Beijing sacked for abuse of power

Authorities in China have sacked 11 high-ranking Beijing police officials for abusing their power.

Our correspondent in China, John Taylor, says the 11 chiefs of police stations throughout Beijing have been fired for abusing their power, misbehaving and failing to follow correct procedures.

It comes after the recent suspension of 40 officers in the southern province of Guangdong, although in that particular case the officers were stood down for failing skills tests.

China's Police Minister has urged officers to stop malignant violations that "stir up public indignation".

A Chinese newspaper has written that many people have a negative attitude of the police, much of which it says is because of officers' bad attitudes.

But police officers are often involved in quelling popular unrest in China, to ensure the Communist Party maintains unfettered control of the country.
