Price of 300-mm wafers to rise 10%, says report

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Prices for 300-mm blank wafers are expected to increase by 10 percent, to over $400, in the fourth quarter as a result of foundries and DRAM makers expand manufacturing capacity, according to a Digitimes report that cited Taiwanese wafer suppliers as sources.

Wafer suppliers including Taisil Electronic Materials (TEM) and Shin-Etsu Handotai have reported tight supply for 300-mm diameter wafers, saying that their own expansion of manufacturing capacity has fallen behind the growth of demand, the report said. Fourth quarter 2003 demand for 300-mm wafers is expected to be 50 percent greater than demand in the first quarter of 2003, according to the report.

Some wafer suppliers, including Japan-based Komatsu Electronic Metals and US-based MEMC, have been conservative in expansion plans, the report said.

Gottfried and Brian, where is Tito's projections for AMAT. Is he still on this site. Remember Value Line has AMAT at a high of $45 in 3-5 years. With our current potential upside cycle this could be that cycle period.
