If the Democrats ever get so weak as to become ineffectual, a centrist third party would emerge and become the check on the Republican Party.

I spitball it as a social split, with the libertarian Republicans making common cause with the Dems on social issues, as in the old "Dixiecrat" days.

The thing I fear from the coming Republican ascendancy is the invasion of our personal life by the Religious.
