But it would mean people would have to donate to charities without getting a tax break and you couldn't deduct your mortgage interest, closing costs etc. Muni' Bonds would adjust sharply up in rates and this would hurt municipalities.
The poor who pay a disproportionate amount of their income on necessities, would be hurt more than "rich folk"...

Tax Lawyers & Accountants would come up with their excuses...

Sales tax avoidance would become a new industry.
Offshore work arounds would become commonplace.

The burden of collecting it would fall on to businesses. A whole new collection system would have to be put in place.

Mind you, I'm just pointing out who would be crying and lobbying. I wouldn't mind something that radical.
