China's IT sales lose steam

BEIJING - China's information-technology market appears to have lost momentum in the second quarter, posting slower growth in sales of personal computers, peripheral products and software, according to a recent report from the Ministry of Information Industry.

China sold 57,900 servers and 2.14 million desktop computers in April-June, both reporting slower growth compared with that in the same period last year. Laptops are the only microcomputer that reports a positive growth: 243,800 sets sold, up 40 percent year on year.

A total of 7.58 billion yuan (US$915 million) worth of software was sold in the domestic market in the second quarter, 2.6 percent less than that in the year ago period. The market capacity of IT service was 8.91 billion yuan, a 2.4 percent decrease. There has been no exciting news from the peripheral products market either. In April-June, China sold 229,700 scanners and 213,800 UPS, dropping 10.13 percent and 0.65 percent respectively.

The report forecasts that China's IT market will move back into the fast lane from the third quarter.
