Nader Takes a Pie in the Face in California

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - California's political scene was looking more and more like a circus on Wednesday, when former Green Party presidential candidate Ralph Nader took a pie in the face during an appearance in San Francisco.

Nader was speaking at an event to endorse fellow Green Peter Camejo for California governor when a man ran into the room where he was speaking, forced a pie in his face, and made a quick exit.

Camejo is running for governor along with at least 246 others including actor Arnold Schwarzenegger who have filed to put their names on the ballot in an upcoming election to recall incumbent Democratic Gov. Gray Davis.

The unprecedented election, in which porn stars, has-been actors and many unknowns will appear on the ballot alongside serious politicians, has made California's political system the subject of worldwide attention and frequent ridicule.

Nader became a popular third party candidate during the 2000 U.S. presidential elections, but also fell out of favor with many liberals who came to view him as a spoiler who took votes from Democratic candidate Al Gore, helping Republican George W. Bush win the presidency by a razor-thin margin.
