Totally agree that self-righteousness isn't limited to people of faith. Although can't totally agree with your other thought.

For most 'normal' people, humility is a good part of their nature. For instance, at least from the outside, Steven Hawking is a brilliant man, and seems to be a humble man who tries to assist others in understanding the universe.

There are those here on SI that may be in fact, quite smart, but try to malign others so that they (in their mind) appear 'smarter'...We see every day, in the media, in the workplace, in politics, and in our daily lives.

Self-righteousness is not limited to those who claim to have faith. Was there anyone more self-righteous than Janet Reno? At least religious people try to temper themselves with a little humility....
