I remember watching Al Gore giving a speech on C-Span (don't know why I torture myself this way) during the 96 campaign before a black audience. He was laying out his plans and began by saying, "The klan...I mean the PLAN...." He stopped speaking, looked at the guy next to him, laughed, and said, "I almost said the klan..." Then they all broke up laughing. I hollered at the TV, "You DID say it Al!" It was a genuine mistake and a funny human moment, but as you say, Republicans aren't cut the same slack.
