The question also grew from the fact that someone posted to me an article about the kid with his arms blew off. Which prompted my response that Saddam probably killed and maimed more in a year than we did taking the country. The logic makes sense to me. Less will die in the long run including the non combatants killed in the war than if we had done nothing and left Saddam in power. In fact I don't think that Saddam's regime merits the term "sovereign". He was neither democratically elected, or royal blood, nor particularly popular. I guess by the same token Nazi Germany was a sovereign nation but I think both were more like experiments gone awry. The taliban could have been termed "sovereign" but considering their brutality and totalitarian policies I think that is giving them more credit than they deserve. What if in the long run it helps to bring more moderate politics to the region? That could also serve as a benefit. The real truth is that the Arab's hate us because we support israel. We support Israel because we are primarily a Judeo Christian society. So bottom line it's a religous war. Our God says Israel belongs to the Jews and there's says "kill them where you find them". Not much different than when the moslem and European Christians fought back and forth during the middle ages. It will probably get worse before it gets better and oil is not the real reason for 9-11, or Iraq.
