The statements on a supposed Iraqi nuclear program focus on how long it would take if Iraq faced no constraints -- but we all know they do face constraints. No evidence has been offered in the NIE in support of the contention that there was an active nuclear program in Iraq. The tubes were the only thing offered as "proof", and it became clear that the people who actually know how a nuclear program works -- such as the DOE -- did not believe the tubes were usable for a nuclear program. The mobile weapons labs were for weather balloons. The rest of the NIE report on other kinds of weapons just underlines how scanty US intelligence became after we decided to withdraw out inspectors. Tenet went on the record to defend himself -- his statements are self-serving at best, which is hardly surprising. Bush and Rice did not even bother to read the NIE. There was no threat and evidence of a threat was non-existent. The White House was willing to present pure speculation as fact.
