disagree with your conjecture. Considering where they are situated, they need the rest of the world desperately, imo No, they need America. They especially needed America in the post-67 period when France dumped them and the USSR was supplying the Arabs hand over fist. But despite needing America, they did the whole settlements thing over America's objections. They annexed East Jerusalem too. They could have done a good deal of incremental clearing and annexing with no more than a few diplomatic protests. They didn't because of internal opposition.
