Al, The Ponzi scheme is being perpetrated by politicians who continue to raid SS funds for purposes other than what they were intended for and who continue to spend money we don't have.

In response to Bush's proposal to partially privatize Social Security, Gore said that he was concerned about being able to pay the beneficiaries (i.e. the old people) if some of the money going into SS was being diverted elsewhere. This was during one of the televised debates.

In effect, he unwittingly confirmed that this was a wealth redistribution program for the elderly. Your comments reflect this very view, along with your attempts to smear conservatives as heartless thugs.

Al,

When I lived in Fla the supermarkets were full of septagenarians on SS working to make ends meet.

I never understood what the problem is with able bodied people continuing to work past the arbitrary "retirement age". The whole idea forcing old people to scrap heap is a new idea, and it is a bad idea.

Just think about this. Wouldn't it be wonderful if a way was found to extend life of an average American by, say 5 years, instantly? I (or any normal person) would say "great". But with the nonsense called Social Security, it would mean bankruptcy for the country.

Think about this: Health of Social Security depends on sickness and death of old people.

Joe

SS was never meant to be a full fledged retirement income source...

it was always *meant* to be part of a 3 part system, that included SS, pensions, and personal savings..

SS being the "safety net"

This statement reflects a fundamental lack of understanding of SS as well as its problems. The problems of SS have nothing to do with the lending of its funds for other purposes (all such loans are evidenced by notes and, in fact, is the way the SS trust fund earns the minuscule return it DOES earn).

SS is a failed social program that constitutes the single greatest threat to our nation. Liberals' total ignorance of the program, coupled with a decision to politicize it, has resulted in a total failure by BOTH PARTIES to deal with the problem.

The excess SS funds have to be invest in government securites. If there was no deficit and no national debt then we would either have to change the SS law or reduce SS taxes or increase SS payouts so that there was no SS surplus.

In any case the money has to be paid out at some point. If the general fund owes SS money then regular taxes might get raised, if it did not then SS taxes would have to be raised. There never really was a trust fund, just government brining in money from different forms of taxes and government spending money through different programs.
