I think it was that last fargin light bulb I screwed in. I suppose I should have used a 40 watt rather than a 60... <vbg> All is well here. I actually attempted to type this message to you twice yesterday. At one point I think I was the only dude in our section of the North East surfin' the net. (Amazing through-put during blackouts.) I'm probably the only dude crazy enough to run his PC off of generator power... Ya see I was feeling pretty good about restoring power to my house. My 5000 watt generator powers about 40 amps at 120 volts which when translated to English means I can wire it to my circuit breaker panel and feed my whole house as long as I don't use all the major appliances at one time. I can power my water well pump, fridge, TV, oil burner, and whatever else. Aside from the loud noise of the generator babling on and on, everything seemed normal. Since I have satellite TV, I could watch the news and see what was going on in Manhattan. What a mess. Boy did I pick a good day to work in the Bronx. I suppose I'd still be stranded there in midtown buying $5 bottles of water. Or sitting in an elevator somewhere between the 23rd and 24th floor in some building with a few other sweaty construction workers. Instead I had just left the Bronx when the power went out. I noticed all the radio stations were dead. It made me a little nervous (I was looking in my rear view mirror for mushroom clouds) until one came back on and told me they were experiencing some power problems. Anyhow, as soon as I fired up the generator (only took four pulls) and made sure everything was running properly, I looked over at my PC and said, hey why not... I powered it on and even though my surge protector was making funny clicking sounds. I saw your message and wrote a funny reply but two seconds before I pressed the Submit button, my fridge must have kicked on and the surge caused my machine to reboot. Being the determined twit that I am I tried it again only to get it rebooted halfway through my condensed version of a reply. By then I figured maybe I shouldn't be fooling around on the net anyway so I talked wifey into walking over to the neighbors to ask them if they wanted to plug in with a long extension cord or anything. Or maybe fill buckets to flush the toilets or whatever. I suppose part of our intention was to help quash the guilty feeling of having all our lights on while that machine brapped away in my back yard. I felt a little uneasy about the noise it was making and didn't want to piss off the neighbors. However, as I felt my ceiling fan cool me it made it hard to go out and shut it down. Around midnight I finally cut it off figuring the freezer stuff would survive the rest of the night. (And what a pretty night i was with Mars staring at me brightly without all of the city's light polution to wash it out.) Around five in the morning our power came back up. Seems that my brothers on Long Island are still without power while my Mom and Dad up in the middle of the Adirondack wilderness had their power restored by 9PM last night. Anyhow, yesterday will be a memorable day for everyone around these parts. I lot of good stories will be generated from this lack of energy. I can't wait to hear them. The old yin and yang effect really works. All the electric power that vanished was replaced by energy in the form of imagination, fear, fun, and anger I suppose. Oh yeah... and walking... I can hardly wait to see some of the photo journalism from this odd occurrance. -ElectricDude
