While Stalin, Hitler and Saddam are unaccountable megalomaniacs, few politicians aren't power-trippers.

Sure.. aren't we all? Don't we all wonder if we couldn't do a better job on certain issues than the powers that be??

And some want fame and glory, and could care less if they make a major difference.. (maybe realizing that there are limits to their power.. So seek power for power's sake)..

But as you stated.. there's a difference. Dictators and totalitarian rulers have very limited accountability, and usually only to their immediate power base of support (economic, social, or ethnic)..

But the US, as well as most other democracies, also have tremendous checks and balances on their governmental institutions. The President's power is checked by Congress and the Judiciary, as well as the individual states, and each of these governmental sectors counter-act and check each other..

But the power of the US governmental is based upon the governed population, not some arbitrary decision by individuals or minority groups.

And that should be the case wherever people live on this planet.
