Don't get me wrong, I think that SA is in it up to their ears. It's almost funny that most of the 9/11 hijackers, and bin Laden, are both from SA (yes, OSL is Yemeni technically but really a Saudi Arabian) and get their main support from SA, yet we invade...Iraq. Does anyone in the Bush administration own a map? I also don't think the State Dept is protecting them; I think that protection is coming from higher up (Bush, Rummy, et al). I think Powell is an island with little support. I believe he'll resign after the election, but that's just a guess.
