GZ, It is true that a Supreme Court Appointment will always raise the legitimacy question. But the real problem is that the Demohawks backed the guy on Iraq. Now, those of us who might otherwise have found some of the Demohawks attractive are not wont to back someone who was so easily fooled by such shabby flim-flam "evidence." So, our alternative is the doves. Many of them are perma-doves, which is not a smart position. We always have to be prepared for war and willing to go to war when it is really necessary. We don't need to be the world's bully boy. So, unless the Dems can find a guy who was smart enough to know that Iraq was wrong but is not permanently against US defense, they have a difficult row to hoe. If you're going to back a Lieberman, for example, you might as well stick with Bush.

So far, only General Wes Clark has the bonafides to be strong on defense while smart on Iraq. And who the heck knows what else the guy believes?
